Airflow teeth cleaning in Penrith

Airflow dental cleaning uses a fine stream of warm water, air and a very fine powder to remove plaque and surface stain from the teeth. At Penrith Dental Care, 42 Castlereagh Street, we use an EMS Airflow unit as part of our professional cleaning. This page explains how it works, what it is used for and what to expect.

How does EMS Airflow cleaning work?

Plaque is a soft film of bacteria, also called biofilm, that builds up on the teeth every day. The Airflow handpiece directs a controlled spray of warm water, air and fine powder at the tooth surface. The spray lifts the biofilm and surface stain away from the enamel, from along the gum line and from places that are hard to reach with other instruments.

The plaque is often stained with a disclosing dye first, so that it can be seen and removed thoroughly. Any hardened tartar is then removed with an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments, because Airflow removes soft deposits and stain, not hard deposits.

What is Airflow used for?

  • removing plaque and surface stain from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking
  • cleaning around crowns, veneers, bridges and dental implants
  • cleaning around braces and behind fixed retainers
  • cleaning between crowded teeth and in the grooves of the back teeth
  • cleaning sensitive teeth and exposed root surfaces, using a low-abrasive powder

What to expect at the appointment

  1. Examination. We check your teeth and gums.
  2. Disclosing. A dye shows where plaque is sitting.
  3. Airflow. The spray removes plaque and stain from the teeth and along the gum line.
  4. Scaling. Any remaining tartar is removed.
  5. Check and advice. We check the result and go over cleaning at home.

Is Airflow suitable for everyone?

Airflow suits most people, but not all. Tell us before your appointment if you have asthma or another breathing condition, are on a low-salt diet, are pregnant, or have any allergies. We will choose the powder and the cleaning method that is appropriate for you.

After an Airflow clean

You can return to normal activities straight away. We usually suggest avoiding strongly coloured food and drink, such as coffee, tea and red wine, and avoiding smoking for a couple of hours afterwards.

Airflow cleaning FAQs

Does Airflow cleaning hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. The water is warm and there is no scraping while the plaque and stain are being removed. Tell us if anything is sensitive.

Does Airflow whiten teeth?

It removes surface stain, which can make teeth look brighter. It does not bleach the teeth or change their natural colour. See teeth whitening.

Does Airflow replace a scale and clean?

No. It is part of a professional clean. Tartar still needs to be removed with a scaler. See what tartar is and how it is removed.

How often should I have it done?

For most people, a professional clean every six to twelve months is appropriate. We will recommend what suits your teeth and gums.
