Can a Toothache Cause a Headache?

Yes, a toothache can cause a headache. The teeth, jaws and much of the head are supplied by the same nerve, the trigeminal nerve, so pain from a tooth can spread to the temple, the eye area or the side of the head. Treating the dental cause usually relieves the headache.

Dental problems that can cause headaches

  • Tooth decay or an inflamed nerve inside a tooth
  • A dental abscess
  • A cracked tooth
  • Impacted or infected wisdom teeth
  • Teeth grinding and clenching, often during sleep
  • Jaw joint (TMJ) problems
  • A bite that puts extra load on some teeth

Do wisdom teeth cause headaches?

They can. A wisdom tooth that is impacted or infected can cause pain that spreads to the jaw, ear and head. Pressure and swelling around the tooth can also make the jaw muscles tense. See our page on emergency dental care if you have swelling or strong pain.

Grinding, clenching and morning headaches

A dull headache at the temples on waking, with tired or sore jaw muscles, can point to grinding or clenching overnight. Read about teeth grinding treatment and jaw pain causes and treatment.

Is it a toothache or a sinus headache?

Sinus infections can make the upper back teeth ache and cause pressure in the face and forehead. The pain often affects several teeth and gets worse when you bend forward. See toothache, sinus pain and headache for how to tell them apart.

What helps in the meantime?

  • Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, if it is suitable for you
  • Avoiding very hot, cold or sweet food and drink
  • Keeping the area clean with gentle brushing
  • Resting the jaw and avoiding hard or chewy food

These measures only ease symptoms. The cause needs to be found and treated by a dentist.

When to seek urgent medical help

See a doctor or go to an emergency department for a sudden severe headache, a headache with fever and a stiff neck, changes in vision, weakness or confusion, or facial swelling that is spreading.
