A deep clean costs more than a regular scale and clean because it treats gum disease below the gum line and usually takes more than one visit. Private dentists in Australia set their own fees, so the cost depends on how many areas need treatment and how long it takes. This guide explains what is involved and what changes the price.

What is a deep clean?
A deep clean, also called scaling and root planing or periodontal debridement, removes plaque and tartar from the root surfaces under the gums. It is used to treat gum disease (periodontitis), where pockets have formed between the teeth and gums. Local anaesthetic is often used to keep you comfortable.
Deep clean compared with a regular clean
- Regular scale and clean: removes plaque and tartar above and just under the gum line, usually in one visit, for people with healthy gums or mild gingivitis
- Deep clean: cleans the root surfaces inside gum pockets, often done in sections over two or more visits, for people with gum disease
What affects the cost?
- How many teeth or sections of the mouth need treatment
- The depth of the gum pockets and amount of tartar
- The number and length of appointments
- Whether local anaesthetic is needed
- X-rays and gum charting needed for diagnosis
- Follow-up and maintenance visits
Because these differ for each person, the fee is quoted after an examination. At Penrith Dental Care we give you a written treatment plan with item numbers and fees before treatment starts.
How much does a regular teeth cleaning cost?
A regular check-up and clean at Penrith Dental Care usually costs between $150 and $300. New patients can book our Complete New Patient Check-Up for $139. The offer is for new patients only, additional treatment is quoted separately, and it can be withdrawn at any time. See dental check-up and clean cost for details.
Do health funds cover a deep clean?
Many extras policies pay a rebate for periodontal treatment, subject to your level of cover, annual limits and waiting periods. We can give you the item numbers so you can check with your fund before you start.
Is a deep clean worth it?
Untreated gum disease can lead to bone loss and loose teeth. A deep clean aims to reduce inflammation and stop the disease progressing. Results vary, and ongoing home care and maintenance visits are needed. Some people have tenderness and sensitivity for a few days afterwards.
