Your Child’s First Dental Visit: What to Expect

The Australian Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental visit by age 1, or when their first tooth appears — whichever comes first. At Penrith Dental Care, we love welcoming our youngest patients, and we have designed our approach to first visits to make them as positive, comfortable, and reassuring as possible.

Why Start So Early?

Many parents are surprised to learn that dental visits are recommended so early. The reasons are important: Early childhood tooth decay (commonly called “bottle decay”) can affect baby teeth from as soon as they erupt, and it progresses quickly. Baby teeth are not just temporary placeholders — they are essential for speech development, proper nutrition, and guiding the eruption of adult teeth. Establishing early dental visits also creates positive associations that protect children from dental anxiety throughout their lives.

What Happens at the First Visit?

For very young children (under 2), the first visit is primarily about familiarisation and parent education. We examine the erupted teeth and gums in a brief, gentle examination, often with the child sitting in a parent’s lap (the “knee-to-knee” technique). We discuss proper cleaning technique for baby teeth, diet and feeding habits that affect tooth health, fluoride, and what development milestones to watch for.

For children aged 2–4, we begin to introduce the dental chair and instruments in a playful, non-threatening way. We may count their teeth, show them the “tooth tickler” (ultrasonic cleaner), and let them hold the suction. We perform a simple examination and, if comfortable, a gentle polish.

How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Visit

  • Read age-appropriate books about dentist visits together (many popular children’s books feature friendly dentist characters)
  • Play “dentist” at home — let them examine your teeth and then examine theirs
  • Use positive language: “we’re going to count your teeth” rather than “you’re going to the dentist”
  • Avoid mentioning words like “hurt”, “needle”, “drill”, or “shot” — even in a reassuring context
  • Don’t bribe with rewards (this implies something bad is coming) but do celebrate positively after
  • Book a morning appointment when children are generally more cooperative and less tired

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Don’t forget that eligible children aged 0–17 can access up to $1,095 in dental benefits through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule over a two-year period. Penrith Dental Care is a registered CDBS provider and bulk-bills eligible services. Ask our team to check your child’s eligibility when you call to book.
