Bioclear Penrith | Black Triangle and Gap Closure

Bioclear treatment in Penrith

Bioclear is a method of rebuilding and reshaping teeth with tooth-coloured composite resin. It uses clear, anatomically shaped forms, known as the Bioclear matrix system, that wrap around the tooth while warmed composite is placed and set. At Penrith Dental Care, 42 Castlereagh Street, we offer treatment using the Bioclear method for suitable patients.

What is the Bioclear matrix system?

A matrix is a thin form placed around a tooth to shape a filling. Bioclear matrices are clear and curved to match the natural contour of a tooth. Warmed composite is injected into the form so that it flows around the tooth in one piece, and it is then set with a curing light, shaped and polished. The result is a smooth, rounded restoration that meets the gum line closely.

What is Bioclear used for?

  • closing black triangles, the small gaps between teeth near the gum line
  • closing gaps between front teeth
  • repairing chipped or worn front teeth
  • reshaping teeth that are small or uneven
  • restoring back teeth where a filling needs to rebuild the side of the tooth

How is Bioclear different from standard bonding?

Both use composite resin. With standard composite bonding, the material is built up and shaped by hand in layers. With the Bioclear method, the shaped matrix forms the contour of the tooth and the composite is placed in a single mass. For cosmetic cases such as black triangles, the method is additive, which means material is added to the tooth and little or no healthy tooth is removed.

What happens at a Bioclear appointment?

  1. Assessment. We examine your teeth and gums and confirm the treatment is suitable. Gum disease and decay are treated first.
  2. Cleaning. The teeth are cleaned thoroughly so the composite bonds to a clean surface.
  3. Matrix placement. The clear forms are fitted around the teeth being treated.
  4. Composite. Warmed composite is injected and set with a curing light.
  5. Shaping and polishing. The restoration is refined and polished.

What are the limits and risks?

Composite can chip, wear or stain over time and may need polishing, repair or replacement. Not every gap can be closed completely, and some cases are better treated with veneers, crowns or orthodontic treatment. We explain what is realistic for your teeth, and the fee, before any treatment.
