What Age Should Children Get Braces or Aligners?

What age can kids get braces? There is no single right age. Most orthodontic treatment starts once most of the adult teeth are through, which is usually between about 11 and 14. An assessment can happen much earlier, and a few problems are better treated while a child is still growing. This guide explains when to have your child assessed and what to look for.

When should a child have an orthodontic assessment?

Your dentist checks how the teeth and jaws are developing at every check-up and will tell you if and when your child should be assessed for orthodontic treatment. Many orthodontists suggest a first assessment between about 7 and 10 years of age, when the first adult molars and front teeth are through. An assessment at this age does not mean treatment will start. Often the advice is simply to wait and watch.

When do most children start braces or aligners?

Most children start between 11 and 14, once the last baby teeth have been lost. Treatment at this age makes use of growth and usually takes about one to three years. Teenagers and adults can also be treated. There is no upper age limit as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.

What is early orthodontic treatment?

Early treatment, sometimes called early intervention, is done while a child still has some baby teeth. It is used for a small number of problems that are easier to correct during growth, such as a crossbite, a narrow upper jaw, or front teeth that stick out and are at risk of injury. Many children who have early treatment still need a second stage of treatment as teenagers.

Signs your child may need orthodontic treatment

  • crowded, overlapping or widely spaced teeth
  • upper front teeth that sit well in front of the lower teeth
  • lower teeth that bite in front of the upper teeth
  • a jaw that shifts to one side when biting
  • baby teeth lost very early or very late
  • difficulty biting or chewing
  • thumb or finger sucking that continues past about age 5

Braces or clear aligners for teenagers?

Fixed braces and clear aligners can both straighten teeth. Aligners are removable and need to be worn for most of the day and night, so they suit teenagers who will wear them as directed. Braces suit more complex tooth movements. See Invisalign vs braces for a comparison.

At Penrith Dental Care, orthodontic treatment is provided by general dentists using Invisalign and clear aligners for suitable patients. We do not fit fixed braces. If your child would be better treated with braces or by a specialist orthodontist, we will tell you and arrange a referral. See orthodontic treatment in Penrith.

FAQs

Is 8 too young for braces?

Full braces are rarely needed at 8, but a small number of problems are treated at this age. An assessment will tell you whether to act now or wait.

Do all the baby teeth need to fall out first?

For most treatment, yes. Early treatment for specific problems can start while some baby teeth remain.

Will my child need retainers?

Yes. Teeth can move back after treatment, so retainers are needed to hold them in position.
