How Often Should You Go to the Dentist?

Most people should see a dentist every 6 to 12 months. The right interval depends on your own risk of decay and gum disease, so some people need visits more often and some can go longer. Your dentist will recommend an interval after examining you.

Who may need to visit more often?

  • People with gum disease or a history of it
  • People who get new decay regularly
  • Smokers
  • People with diabetes or a dry mouth
  • People wearing braces or aligners
  • Pregnant women
  • People with crowns, bridges, implants or dentures that need monitoring

How often should children go to the dentist?

Children should have their first dental visit when the first tooth appears or by their first birthday, then regular check-ups, usually every 6 to 12 months. Eligible children may be covered by the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. See our kids dentist page and our guide to tooth decay in children.

What happens at a check-up?

  • Examination of teeth, gums and the soft tissues of the mouth
  • X-rays when clinically needed
  • Removal of plaque and tartar
  • Advice on brushing, cleaning between teeth and diet
  • A plan for any treatment that is recommended

Do I need a check-up if nothing hurts?

Yes. Decay and gum disease often cause no pain in the early stages. Finding them early usually means simpler and less costly treatment.

When to book sooner

  • Toothache or sensitivity that does not settle
  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • A broken tooth or lost filling
  • A mouth ulcer or patch that has not healed after two weeks
  • Jaw pain or clicking
